A review on the Book Mad House

Mad house is a collection of a eighteen short stories by santwana chatterjee. Mostly all the stories are psychological . the writer is little more successful in dealing with the psychological feelings of a character. The name of the book “madhouse” is named upon one of the story. In which a lady who is in her 50s and who had a son in his last teen fell In love with a family doctor who frequently used to visit their home to look after her husband . her husband is in death bed struggling with cancer.It is narrated that the doctor is far younger than her. She even dreamed of having biological relationship with the doc when her husband is lying helpless counting the days to die. Finally her husband died and she cried a lot in the funeral for the reason that she wouldn’t see that doctor again. She even told her son about her love story and requested him to bring a doctor for her. All considered her as a mad and put her in madhouse. This is the summary of a story mad house. In this story santawana failed to cope with the real psychology of a character. How can an Indian mother narrate her on sighted love story to her son? In Hindu religion mother is regarded as goddess durga who can protect her family from any disaster in a poor condition. In order of handling the family bravely , this Indian mother of a story became mad in love with the family doctor. We consider mother as a goddess laxmi who brings wealth and prosperity to the family , and goddess sita who is ready to go behind the earth to prove her honesty. We were grown up with such lesson from our religion. India is a land of culture and tradition. Ya offcourse now there is little bit influence of western culture but Indian mother never could tell her love story with her son in up coming 200 years.
